No National boundaries here again.

Logically I should be cutting out bands, though an archive could be useful!

I mention elsewhere about choosing band names. No difficulty here? Why does the UK press always refer to a band as "The new C******y M**e, R*******d or whatever when the band indicated still thrives? Music is not a commodity like a soap powder! There ARE musical influences in ANY band obviously! I must admit though to be a bit mystified by the trend to mix different elements, such as "Nu Metal", "Rap Metal" etc. In 5 years time what influence will these "Hybrid" acts have?

To start with, Three (+1) from The Newsgroups. (er they were - see Foot of page)

Leaves

Icelandic band. They have "covered" Tomorrow never knows by the Beatles as a B side - interesting.

Album out. Vocals are compared with Billy McKenzie and (Geneva I think) by a writer to teletext.

Kinesis Interesting comment on the single "new art destroys the old" A new second album is due soon.

Second single part produced by Dave Eringa who also did the last two albums by Idlewild.

They have self released an 8 track mini album (see their site) and two singles to date. They were signed with Independiente.

The Shifty Disco CD Club etc. Now renamed Star Harbour.

Two tracks here as is usual. Monthly releases. Just been renamed - now into the fifth year. Releases may be supplemented by more additional album style or full singles.

Hundred Reasons

At least 3 EPs so far. Rock band this one! They have a strong and growing fan base.

Kid Conspiracy They were later called Azure Glow. A change of direction according to John Paul! Alas they are disbanded!

See (and hear) at MySpace.

John Paul (far left) called in on the 19th Sept to tell me about the band. The EP "Jericho" is available (3 tracks) and is a good first cut! He's been in a few other combos, but this one seems the best. More later.

Damien Rice. A singer songwriter from Ireland.

See Yahoo! Groups.

C21 English Site.

From Denmark of all places. The main group site is in Danish too! I'd not class them as a "Boyband" as they play and write too! The Quote in the centre column was from the English text site (nla it seems).

David Pepke

C21 is the name of a brilliant new boy band from Denmark.

C21 are David Pepke, Esben Duus and Søren Bregendal Sørensen.

The guys were discovered back in 1999 by their producer, Lars Quang. Since then they have been working hard to break through and now they're finally here with their amazing debut single "Stuck In My Heart" from their highly anticipated upcoming album which will be out in the beginning of next year.

C21 is not your average boy band. They write their own songs (some of them along with their producer) Plus they play their own instruments. Shortly said: They're a band who's got it going on and besides from that they all look adorable! *lol*

C21 has arrived and they're ready to take over!

Palo Alto "Still" EP (due Feb.)

Promo CD for 1st 100 on mailing list. (Offer closed.)

Band website.

Two track promo from a note on UK teletext on Channel 4 Who says TV Text doesn't work? It was around b4 mobile txtg took off! More info on the relatively new band website.

Note there is another Palo Alto!

Just got the single sampler. "Still" begins quietly, cymbals-.--. A break midway brings a more emphatic heavier section, which comes as a surprise. "Don't Shoot" also has a minimalist start, but with floating vocals over bass, percussion and guitars, with gentle effects predominant, throughout the track Very relaxing slow track this, but is far from "boring indie" which all the "dance crowd" go on about. When this full EP is released I can recommend it on this evidence!

Mull Historical Society.

A very interesting band indeed. "Their" album shows a wide range.

Actually the "Band" is ONE man!

See reference to Tugboat label.

John Mayer

Hear the music on line on the official site.

Came across him by chance, when chatting about Ash! Album "Room for Squares", producer John Alagia (Dave Matthews Band, Ben Folds Five) has been released.

Enthusiasm is contagious and that's why songwriters with a genuine, obvious passion for their craft can't help but attract an audience. John Mayer has earned a legion of devoted fans in and around his adopted hometown of Atlanta, where he moved in 1998 after a stint at Boston's Berklee College of Music. His creative songwriting and warm stage presence establish him as a formidable musical force, and the smoky swagger of his voice at once evokes Sting, Dave Matthews and Jakob Dylan. The new album, entitled Room For Squares, is a full-band electric effort. Mayer was joined in the studio by bassist David LaBruyere, (who also accompanies him on the road), as well as drummer Nir Zidkiyahu (Genesis, Alana Davis).

British Sea Power

Rough Trade single

Haven. Vocal Shades of Geneva and Puressence, both overlooked bands who deserved a better response!

Single out "Say Something"

Producer none other than Johnny Marr! Album out too..

Perhaps the most distinctive sleeve artwork since the Stone Roses?

Worth seeking out the CDR promo of "Let it Live", "Comes A Change" and "Last Dance".

Well balanced and structured song, a high, light vocal from Gary. There is a strong chorus on the title lyric, but outta the reach of most guys? (Cue harmony!) Shades of Thom Yorke on "sleep"

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club Eponymous album out now.

Robert Turner, Peter Hayes and Nick Jago, from San Francisco. The B sides on "love Burns" remind me of Spacemen3, Spiritualised and even of Slowdive! The near hypnotic effects in particular, and the modulation is most impressive! On this evidence they are not a typical rock band!

Whatever Happened To My Rock 'n Roll (Punk Song), Love Burns.

Vocally there are shades of The Church, an Aussie band.

UK gigs have given Nick Jago Visa problems, so ex Verve Drummer, Pete Salisbury will stand in.

Little Fat Hoover

The Way To Go very well produced track indeed!

MP3s on the site plus pics and other info and NO popups!

Owen's Band Angry Young Man

"Free" Mp3 available on site.

From Muse Newsgroup

They do indeed sound "angry" on the track "Free", mostly so in the choruses where there is a rather heavier guitar riff. The rest has a gentler repeated guitar line with quite laid back vocal, not the more usual higher variety. Demo only though- will profit from more work methinks.
